I would like to consider myself as a true gamer.I have been gaming for 75% of my life, ever since I was seven years old, in 1999.

People think to be able to call yourself a true gamer, then ‘you must own X console or play X type games’. Or, ‘if you don’t own X console then you must not be a true gamer’. But really, is that what we would really consider to call ourselves a true gamer? Snobbish if you ask me.

True gamers. To me a true gamer is someone that just enjoys games overall. It doesn’t matter if they own a Nintendo Wii, a Xbox 360, or a PlayStation 3. Hell, they could even be rocking a Nintendo 64 still. A true gamer is someone that games because of the love for the medium. Love to buy that next game, or to own your friends online, or even to play through a story campaign. Just because you play something different than someone else, doesn’t mean you are not any less a gamer than they are. Do you enjoy Call of Duty, sport games, and realistic games? I know someone that does, yet they love to talk about the games. It’s what they enjoy. Silent Hill, Alan Wake, Twisted Metal, just because they are not huge successes doesn’t mean they are bad games by any means. However, niche gaming doesn’t mean you are any more of a gamer than someone that enjoys first / third person shooters. Think of it in terms of sports. Just because someone enjoys Soccer in America, doesn’t mean he/she is any less of a sports fanatic than a football fanatic in America.

A True Gamer is someone that is true to themselves. They buy the games they buy because they enjoy that game. Believe it or not, people don’t always buy a game because X company put a lot of ads and hype behind it. To someone, a true gamer could be someone that sits with a bunch of friends and plays pen & paper D&D. Gaming has been around way beyond the consoles and PC that we have now.

So I ask you. Are you a true gamer? Do you think about games while you work? Do you find yourself whistling tunes throughout the day? Do you get excited for the next purchase game that is about to release? Do you enjoy games that others usually don’t? Yes to any one of those? You are a true gamer. Do not let anyone tell you different. Just because you don’t game the same way as someone else does, doesn’t mean they are any better than you. If they give you shit about it, then hell, they are questionably a gamer. So what do you consider a true gamer?

Believe in what you love and love what you believe.
